Nursing Philosophy
a nourishing practice
The preliminary focus of nursing is the faithful service to patients and their community of support through medical care. Nursing is a nourishing practice, distinct in its ability to recognize the beauty and value of the individuals served. Through nursing, one must understand the inherent value and dignity of an individual. Nurses should be truth tellers, and remind people of their value and worth while caring for them physically. A nurse understands the desire for relationship in each individual and stops at nothing to provide one more smile, word of comfort or listening ear. Through service and interaction, a nurse must identify the distinct nature, culture, loves and dreams of each patient and their family. I truly believe that care has great control over the effectiveness of our nursing practice, understanding that skill without care can be purposeless. Without loving care, we could leave patients in a worse state of emotional distress than in which they came in, defeating the purpose of treatment. If holistic restoration is not at the center of service, we must realign our thinking.
Another aspect aside from holistic care of patients and community is the power of creativity and critical thinking. Nurses are engagers with text and controversy in their field. They wrestle with literature, studies and personal experience, working to develop stronger methods of care. Nurses understand the power of creativity in their practice. They recognize the importance of ingenuity and work tirelessly to provide guidance and action for patients in varying communities. One must understand that passivity is never a focus, but we must step into an active role of deliberation and interaction with our science to bring improvement.
Nursing is flexible and limitless in its abilities to serve nationally and worldwide. Nursing provides a platform for public and global education, as well as increased community health. Nurses get to actively pursue health issues in their surrounding communities and work to engage with the problems. Nurses must be developers and humbly lead members of the community to better practice in health.
Trust is of commonplace in the nursing field, for daily we must exercise trust of God’s sovereignty in our patients and circumstances. Nurses hold a great need for spiritual care, and should recognize personal needs during their workweeks. Because we are asked daily to step into pain and hurt, one must be ready to seek God for clarity and peace. Finally nurses must live a life of gratitude. We are partners of communities, families, schools, clinics and developing nations. We are co-laborers, focused to bring holistic restoration to people everywhere. We must walk in humility and serve confidently in the grace that God has given each of us. Nursing is a testing field that calls for joyful, passionate and dedicated workers to bring life into areas where only hopelessness is found. It calls for vibrant and honest leaders who are willing to walk alongside people in pain and in joy.
